博士生劉巧珍等利用轉基因小鼠特異性標記追蹤心外膜細胞發育的命運。結果發現,胚胎期標記的心外膜細胞除了分化成冠狀血管平滑肌細胞外,還可形成心臟房室之間的脂肪細胞。但在成體中再度標記心外膜時卻觀察不到,這表明成體穩態中心外膜轉變成脂肪的能力被抑制。研究證明成體心臟損傷時,心外膜細胞可再度激發胚胎發育中的一些特性,分化成其他類型細胞。
該工作進一步研究了心臟損傷情況下心外膜細胞轉變成脂肪細胞的能力,并意外發現損傷部位形成脂肪組織,而其中部分脂肪細胞正是來源于心外膜。研究還發現,心外膜及其衍生的細胞是具有多能性的,在不同的培養條件下可被誘導成脂肪細胞、軟骨細胞和成骨細胞。
